Confirmation stalled in Senate for almost a year
Ed Gonzalez, President Joe Biden’s nominee for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director, withdrew from the nomination on Monday. He submitted a formal letter to the president on Sunday, where he lamented the stall of his Senate confirmation process and voiced his commitment as sheriff of Harris County in Texas. Harris County covers the city of Houston, which has seen a strong uptick in crime in the last few months.
“More than a year has passed since the president nominated me for this important position, which has not had a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration,” Sheriff Gonzalez stated. “All this leads me to the unavoidable conclusion that in 2022, I must devote my full, undivided attention and energy toward fulfilling the duties that the people of Harris Country elected me to perform.”
